Abstract: This paper clarifies the characteristics of soft magnetic composite (SMC) core superior in the downsizing of motors. First, This paper clarifies the optimal punch control in the press forming process for an SMC core of a DC motor to give a good B-H characteristic and a good mechanical strength. Next, SMC core for DC motor is developed using the optimized press forming method. This paper introduces overhangs in the armature SMC core. It increases the airgap flux per pole by about 14%. Moreover, it is shown experimentally that the efficiency of the motor is improved from 55% of the DC motor made of laminated core to 60%.
